A top BNP leader has demanded impartial investigation into the recent debacle in the country's share market.

Standing committee member Moudud Ahmed, at a discussion in the city on Sunday, reiterated that Tk 90 billion of the small investors has vanished from the market.

He also said Tk 150 billion had been stashed out of the country during the recent plunge in the market.

Moudud said, "Those, who are responsible for this, will have to be identified."

He urged the government to form an impartial committee to investigate the matter. "Steps will have to be taken against the persons responsible for this after quick completion of the investigation."

Meanwhile, finance minister A M A Muhith in the afternoon, after holding two meetings on Sunday, declared formation of a probe committee to look into the recent plunge.

Muhith also said trading would resume on Tuesday without the circuit breakers.

Moudud, who sought resignation of Muhith and top officials of the Securities and Exchange Commission on Saturday, renewed the demand on Sunday.

He, however, thanked the minister who on Friday admitted that he as well as the SEC might have committed some mistakes in handling the market.

"But the finance minister as well as the officers of the market regulator and Dhaka Stock Exchange should resign over ethical reason."

The discussion was arranged by Nationalist Fishermen Party to mark the 75th birth anniversary of late president and BNP's founder Ziaur Rahman.
