More than 50 teachers of Jahangirnagar University staged a hunger strike on Saturday over a seven-point demand including trial of the 'murderers' of student Zubair Ahmed.
The strike is scheduled to continue until 4pm after they began it at 11 am in front of the registrar building. The programme was part of a six-day plan of protests.
The teachers, protesting under the banner of Shikkhok Somaj, sang patriotic songs, screened documentaries and recited poems during the strike.
Professors Nasim Akhter Hossain, M A Matin, A A Mamun, Tarek Shamsur Rehman, Sharif Uddin, Manosh Kumar Chowdhury, A T M Atikur Rahman were among the participants.
Professor Nasim Akhter Hossain, convenor of Shikkhok Somaj, told bdnews24.com that their protests would continue until the authorities make any visible progress to meet the demands.
Meanwhile, university vice chancellor professor Sharif Enamul Kabir in a parley at his office assured the protesting teachers of meeting their demands soon, said professor Nasim.
He also asked the teachers to cooperate with the university administration to successfully stage the convocation programme.
Among the pre-announced programmes there are mass contact with general people on Feb 5, hunger strike on Feb 6 and issuing an open letter to the chancellor on Feb 7.
On Jan 9, Zubair succumbed to his injuries after allegedly being stabbed by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on the campus in Savar.
